The new Battle Builder has launched
Rebuilt for The Old World, with Battle March, Grand Melee, Combined Arms and GermanComp built in. Plus rounds and results in the app, hosting upgrades, and the Square Based Open Toronto in October.
Published 10 September 2026
The new Battle Builder has launched, on web and in the OWR app. It builds Battle March, Grand Melee, Combined Arms and GermanComp lists, and submits straight to your event.
Also this month: rounds and results in the app, and a stack of hosting upgrades. Over 3,100 of you now have OWR accounts. Thank you.
The Square Based Open Toronto runs on 23 October. See what else is coming up on OWR.
The new Battle Builder has launched
We rebuilt Battle Builder from the ground up for The Old World. Open it at oldworldrankings.com/builder, or from the Builder tab in the app.
Rules you can read. Every special rule on a unit is clickable and phase-based. Switch to the charge, or a later combat round, and the stat line, weapon rows, AP and saves update for that phase. Tap a modified number and it shows the base value, each modifier, and the result.
Build around a rule. Search your faction by special rule. Type Move Through Cover and it lists every unit, model and magic item that has it, with an Add button next to each.
Validation for everything. All 18 factions and 21 Armies of Infamy on FAQ and Errata v1.5.3, allies and alternative categories included. Pin a list to an older rules version if that is what your event runs.
Submit straight to your event. Your library shows what is due and when, and you submit from inside the builder or from your registration. Submitted lists carry a trophy badge that links back to the event. Open any Digital List on OWR in the builder and make it your own.
Made to play. Show your opponent your list as a QR code or a short link. Print an A4 sheet with stats and weapons in one frame and a special rules appendix. Start a game against your opponent's list and track units at 25 percent, fled or destroyed, the general, the BSB and captured standards, with the score kept for you.
Your library. Folders with colours, a traffic-light rating on each list, favourites for a fully kitted unit you keep taking, and sync across web, iPhone and Android.
Your Old World Builder lists are safe. Bring them across from the Import screen, one at a time or as .owb.json files, and the old builder stays in the menu for a few more weeks while you move. Cloud Sync and the Unit Library are free during the beta.
Battle March, end to end
Battle March: General's Companion runs on OWR from list to final round. There are 25 Battle March events on OWR between now and the end of November, across 9 regions.
In Battle Builder. Create a list, set Game Format to Battle March, pick 400, 500, 600 or 750 points, and the Battle March rules are checked as you build: Core at least 25 percent, Characters and Special capped at 50 percent, no single character over 25 percent, a General, and at least two non-character units. Each warning jumps to the unit that caused it, and the list goes green when it is legal.
In your hosted event. The scenario picker has all six General's Companion scenarios: Pitched Battle, Close Encounter, Opposed Flanks, Meeting Engagement, Mountain Pass and Outflank. Pick one and its recommended secondaries are loaded for the round, Treasure Troves, Strategic Landmark, Raid and Burn and Baggage Carts among them.
Official deployment maps. The map library covers Battle March, Matched Play and Warhammer Battles, with the battlefield size and page reference on each one. Pick a map for a round and the Battle Board and Battle Hub show it to every player alongside the scenario notes and the round clock.
Host a Battle March event on OWR.
Army comps, built in
Comps are grouped in the format picker, so the packs that belong together sit together. GermanComp v1.5.3 has its own group with the Restriction Pack, Gamechanger Pack and Faction Pack under it. Battle March, Grand Melee, Combined Arms and Open War sit in the standard group, and anything that cannot be combined is greyed out and tells you why.
Pick it, and the list changes. A comp is a layer on top of your army list. Where a Faction Pack re-prices a unit, changes a stat or adds an option, the unit you are looking at is already the comp version.
Budgets that are not points. GermanComp counts Wizard Levels, Fly and War Machines against allowances that scale with game size. The header shows them live next to your points, like WL 6/8 and Fly 2.5/4, and each unit shows what it is spending.
Written out for you. Every restriction is shown in plain English, such as "Wizard Levels: 0-2 per 500 pts" or "No allied contingents", so you are not cross-referencing a PDF mid-build. Each pack links straight to where its rules are published.
The composition and validation engine was built to take any comp, not a fixed list of them, so more are coming online as we add them. If your event runs a pack we do not cover yet, tell us and we will look at it.
On the OWR side, events running the LD3 pack now show as GermanComp on the event page, in the Faction Stats comp filter and in season rules.
Rounds and results in the app
The app launched in August with registration, lists and scoring. Rounds and results are now in it too.
Rounds and Results tabs built for a phone: match cards, team grouping, a round picker and live standings.
Latest Results feed so you can follow the whole event, not just your own game.
For tournament organisers
Late army lists. Allow first submissions after the deadline until lists go visible. Late lists are flagged for you, and players see the deadline on their My Events card.
Gameday notifications. An alert when a player answers a resubmit request, a score confirmation nudge, and a check-in reminder. Start-time reminders name the round.
Scenario map library. 18 official deployment diagrams for Battle March, Matched Play and Warhammer Battles. Pick one for a round instead of uploading your own.
Guided scoring. During score entry the next objective a player has not addressed is highlighted, so nobody skips a zero result.
Region comms. Region admins can email players in their region from the region dashboard, with a recipient picker and replies routed back. Region roles are now split into moderator and admin.
Season comp rules. Include or exclude events by army comp for season eligibility, for example a season with no Battle March events.
Faster hosted event setup. Switching tabs on the setup screens only loads that tab, and the browser Back button works across the dashboard and filtered pages.
Pick your region
The region switcher is a grid now. Each region shows its player count and published events, a gold trophy marks regions with a masters or season running, and there is a Request a region link if yours is not there yet.
