I grew up on Warhammer Fantasy, right from the early days, and so much of what I remember from those years came from one man's pencil, ink and paint. The iconic images lodged in my memory were all his. It's a humbling thing to sit with: that one person's imagination, pressed onto paper, could shape the inner worlds of so many of us, and will keep doing so long after he's gone.

He never made it clean. His worlds were grimy, crowded, half-lit, full of faith and rot and strange devotion, and that's exactly why they felt real. Where others drew heroes, he drew the weight they carried. A whole generation of artists learned to see the Old World and the far future through his eyes, and most of us never even knew his name while it was happening. We just knew the feeling.

I was never as deep in 40K as some, but it's his imagery that makes the grimdark feel like home. That lived-in, gothic, beautiful gloom no one has ever rendered better. He didn't just illustrate that world. He gave it its face.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war - but John knows all its secrets.

Thank you, John.
